After a deep slumber, I was suddenly awakened by a flash of thought in my mind in the wee hours of 15th September 1972, a Friday. I got the first line of the following composition “unakkum enakkum uLLa poruttam
enna poruttam aiyA”? Prior to going to bed, I was just hearing the song “avarkkum enakkum” of Madurai Veeran in the sweet voice of Late P. Bhanumati. Probably, I was ruminating this in my mind since the rAgam “dEsh” appealed very much. After I got up, I was again repeating this line in my mind to search for the second line to complete pallavi and got it after an hour of toil. Thereafter, I left that at that stage till today, for 40 years and completed the pallavi with anupallavi and caraNam. It is still mysterious to me as to how I got this line when Ramalinga aDigaL also sang a similar line in his meyvizhippu that runs like ‘enakkum unakkum isainda poruttam enna poruttamO’? especially when I was not aware of tiruaruTpA till 1992, when I heard it, twenty years later!!
Music has no barrier as we are all aware. It has no caste, creed, religion, language, region etc etc and is universal and divine. It is liked by every soul unless it is deranged. Still there are people who fight foolishly that one must not sing in Sanskrit or Telugu or Kannada but in Tamil only. These people also created a fuss in the Sadguru Thyagaraja Aradahana at Tiruvaiyaru sometimes back. Keeping this mind, I have been longing to compose a song that at least covers the four Dravidian languages and Sanskrit known in Carnatic Music circle. It fructified only recently. Here is that Keertanai which has all these languages. It is not in MaNipravALam where the languages are mixed in the same sentence whereas here there are separate stanzas for each language so that the meaning can be understood by the concerned when that stanza is sung. Let us move from fanaticism to functionalism at least in the area of music.
